MoveSAFE Injury Prevention Framework

Reducing the risk of musculoskeletal injuries in the workplace is challenging – as we all know, there’s a lot more to it than simply lifting with your back in a good position! The hardest part for many organisations is identifying what intervention is going to provide best return on their investment, and then ensuring that every initiative, internal and external, is delivered under a unified theme. Workforces tend to dismiss as ‘thought bubbles’ programs that are rolled out in an ad-hoc fashion without follow-up or reference to previous or ongoing plans. This compromises employee engagement and learning, and wastes valuable time and money.

To address this challenge, Ethos Health uses our MoveSAFE injury prevention framework to help employers bring it all together. Here’s how it works with just the first two levels for simplicity:

Figure 1: MoveSAFE injury prevention framework – first two levels only

Level 1 – Should we focus on Innovative Prevention or Accelerated Recovery?

Deciding your immediate priority comes down to understanding two trends in your workforce – your injury rate (TRIFR) and recovery time (RTW days and/or costs), per the table below.

RECOVERING QUICKLYRECOVERING SLOWLY
LOW INJURY RATEInnovative preventionAccelerated recovery
HIGHER INJURY RATEInnovative preventionBoth

Level 2 – What key element(s) of Prevention (or Recovery) is going to give me best ROI?

We can help you figure that out! The remainder of the model steps out how to measure each key determinant, prioritise target areas, map current initiatives and plan your next steps. You’ll end up with a one page plan that speaks to everyone in your organisation and ties the whole process together.
