Starting physiotherapy for the first time can feel a little daunting, especially if you’re not sure what will happen during the appointment. At Ethos Health, our goal is to make the process as comfortable, informative and effective as possible from the moment you walk through our clinic doors.

Whether you’re dealing with a recent injury, ongoing pain, or looking to improve your physical performance, understanding what to expect can help you get the most out of your first appointment.

How Long Is a Physiotherapy Appointment?

At Ethos Health, initial physiotherapy appointments and review consultations are typically 30 minutes in length. This gives your physiotherapist enough time to understand your condition, assess your movement and begin treatment.

If you have multiple areas requiring treatment, 60-minute appointments are also available to ensure adequate assessment and care.

What Should I Wear?

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Most physiotherapy appointments include some form of movement assessment or rehabilitation exercises, and our clinic gym may be used during your session.

It’s also helpful if the area requiring treatment is easily accessible. For example:

  • Shorts are ideal for knee, hip or ankle injuries.
  • A singlet or loose-fitting shirt may be helpful for shoulder or neck concerns.

What Should I Bring?

To help us provide the best possible care, please bring:

  • Any referrals from your GP, specialist or other healthcare provider.
  • Your private health insurance card (if applicable).
  • Information about any imaging you’ve had, such as X-rays, MRIs or ultrasounds.

If you’ve recently had imaging performed, let our reception team know before your appointment so they can help obtain the results for your treating physiotherapist.

Do I Need a Referral?

No referral is required to see a physiotherapist at Ethos Health.

You can book directly with our team whenever you need assistance with an injury, pain or movement concern. However, if you’ve been referred by a GP, specialist or another healthcare professional, please bring any relevant documentation with you to your appointment.

What Happens During the Appointment?

Your first appointment is focused on understanding your condition and developing a clear plan to help you achieve your goals.

1. Discussion and Injury History

Your physiotherapist will begin by asking detailed questions about your injury or concern, including:

  • How the injury occurred
  • When symptoms began
  • What aggravates or eases the problem
  • Previous injuries or treatments
  • Your work, sport and lifestyle activities

This conversation helps build a complete picture of what’s contributing to your symptoms.

2. Physical Assessment

Next, your physiotherapist will assess the affected area. This may include:

  • Movement testing
  • Strength assessments
  • Flexibility measurements
  • Functional movements relevant to your daily activities or sport

These assessments help identify the underlying cause of your symptoms and guide treatment decisions.

3. Hands-On Treatment

Depending on your condition, your physiotherapist may provide hands-on treatment during the appointment. This could include techniques designed to reduce pain, improve mobility and support recovery.

4. Exercise Prescription

Exercise is an important part of physiotherapy treatment. In most cases, you’ll be guided through specific rehabilitation exercises tailored to your condition and goals.

At Ethos Health, our fully equipped gym allows patients to practise prescribed movements under professional guidance, ensuring exercises are performed safely and effectively.

5. Your Treatment Plan

Before you leave, your physiotherapist will discuss a clear treatment plan with you. This may include:

  • Your diagnosis or working diagnosis
  • Recommended exercises
  • Activity modifications
  • Expected recovery timelines
  • Follow-up appointments if required

The aim is for you to leave with a better understanding of your condition and confidence in the next steps of your recovery.
