WHS Consultant (Fatigue SME)

We are seeking an experienced WHS professional to join our Workplace Services Team. While this role functions primarily as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Fatigue Risk Management Systems (FRMS), we recognise that the fatigue-specific elements can be trained. The absolute essential requirement for this role is your real-world WHS experience—specifically your ability to facilitate Workplace Risk Assessment and Controls (WRACs), your deep understanding of safety legislation, and your high-level technical writing capability. In this role, you will lead the development, review, and optimisation of FRMS for our clients.

You will utilise clinical, evidence-based, and risk-based methodologies to analyse operational data, assess fatigue risk, identify mitigation strategies, communicate with workers and leaders, and author technical reports. Furthermore, while your primary mandate is fatigue risk management, you are joining a broad consultancy. There will be ample opportunities to leverage your WHS background to consult across our other disciplines, including general health, wellbeing, and injury management initiatives.

What Does an Average Week Look Like?

  • Risk Assessments: Facilitating comprehensive Workplace Risk Assessment and Control (WRAC) sessions and translating findings into robust Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Reporting: Developing formal service proposals and drafting structured technical reports that deliver clinical, evidence-based recommendations to site executives.
  • Data Analysis: Conducting biomathematical modelling and analysing complex Excel/CSV data arrays (rosters, telematics, self-reports) to identify and quantify risk hotspots.
  • System Review: Auditing existing client safety systems against established legislative frameworks and industry best practices to ensure strict compliance and operational safety.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Presenting high-level findings to site senior executives, safety managers, and operational crews, maintaining a highly professional and consultative demeanour.

 Essential Criteria

  • Real-World WHS Experience: At least five years of practical, operational experience in Work Health and Safety, specifically within high-risk, 24/7 environments (e.g., mining, transport, utilities, health or emergency services).
  • Risk Assessment Expertise: Demonstrated, hands-on proficiency in facilitating complex risk assessments (specifically WRACs) and developing targeted, evidence-based mitigation strategies.
  • Legislative Acumen: Deep understanding of current WHS legislative and regulatory requirements, and the ability to translate these into operational compliance.
  • Technical Writing & Communication: Advanced technical writing skills with the proven ability to produce formal, structured reports, alongside the capacity to confidently present to executive leadership.
  • Qualifications: Tertiary qualification in Work Health and Safety (WHS), Health Science, Allied Health, Human Factors, Occupational Hygiene, or a closely related discipline.
  • Analytical Skill: Strong capability in analysing quantitative data to draw clinical safety conclusions.
  • Willingness to Learn: A strong drive to undertake specialised, on-the-job training to master the specific scientific and regulatory frameworks of Fatigue Risk Management.
  • Mobility: Unrestricted driver’s license with the ability to travel across the Newcastle and Hunter Valley regions, with occasional interstate travel.

 Desirable Criteria

  • Pre-existing knowledge of legislative requirements specific to fatigue management.
  • Experience utilising Biomathematical Models (BMM), specifically the Fatigue and Risk Index (FRI).
  • Advanced IT and data visualisation skills (Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Previous experience consulting in a B2B environment or managing major corporate accounts.
  • Familiarity with the integration of fatigue monitoring technologies (e.g., in-cab camera alerts, wearables) into broader safety systems.
