Making an appointment with a dietitian is an important first step towards improving your health, managing a medical condition, or developing a healthier relationship with food. If you have never seen a dietitian before, you may be wondering what happens during your first consultation and what you should expect.

At Ethos Health, our dietitians take a personalised approach, working with you to understand your individual circumstances, goals and challenges. Your first appointment is an opportunity to discuss your nutrition concerns, ask questions and develop a plan that works for you.

How long is a dietitian appointment?

Your initial dietitian consultation will usually run for 60 minutes, allowing plenty of time for your dietitian to understand your health history, nutrition concerns and goals.

Follow-up appointments are typically 20 minutes, with the focus depending on your individual needs and the progress you are making towards your goals.

Dietitian Appointment

What happens during my first dietitian consultation?

Your first consultation is primarily focused on gathering information and developing an understanding of your individual nutrition needs.

Your dietitian will complete a comprehensive dietary assessment, which may include a computer-based review, and discuss relevant clinical and lifestyle factors that may influence your nutrition.

During your appointment, you will discuss your current eating patterns, your reasons for seeking support, and what you would like to achieve through your appointments.

By the end of your first consultation, your dietitian will provide you with a personalised action plan outlining the first steps towards improving your nutrition.

What will my dietitian ask me about?

To provide nutrition advice that is tailored to your health needs, your dietitian will ask questions about a range of factors that influence your eating habits and overall wellbeing.

This may include:

  • Your goals, motivations and what you would like to achieve from your sessions
  • Your medical history, including any health conditions, medications and relevant test results
  • Your current eating patterns and food habits
  • Your work and home routines, including your schedule and lifestyle factors
  • Your approach to meal planning and food preparation
  • Your weight history, if relevant to your goals or health needs
  • Your physical activity levels

Understanding these factors helps your dietitian identify the changes that are most realistic and achievable for you, while supporting you to work towards your health goals.

Will I receive a meal plan?

This depends on the reason you are seeing a dietitian and your individual needs.

While meal plans may be provided in some circumstances, our dietitians more commonly focus on helping you identify the key dietary changes that can improve your health, support your relationship with food, or assist with managing specific medical conditions or symptoms.

Where appropriate, generic meal plans may be provided as a guide to support your nutrition goals.

Will I be weighed or measured during my appointment?

Whether you are weighed during your appointment will depend on your preferences and the reason you are seeking dietetic support.

In some situations, weight measurements may be clinically useful. For example, weight may be required to calculate nutritional requirements for someone receiving tube feeding or to guide nutrition strategies in disability care.

However, if there is no medical reason to collect this information, your dietitian will discuss the benefits and considerations with you and work together with you to determine whether weighing is helpful for your overall health and goals.

Ethos Health also has access to an InBody 570 scanner, which provides information about body composition, including muscle mass. This may be suitable for individuals who are interested in monitoring changes in muscle mass.

What should I bring to my first dietitian appointment?

To help your dietitian understand your health and nutrition needs, it can be helpful to bring:

  • Recent blood test results or specialist reports relevant to your reason for attending
  • A list of your current medications and/or supplements
  • A food diary, if you would like to keep one before your appointment*

* Keeping a food diary for a few days or up to a week before your consultation is optional and not essential. However, a food and symptom diary can be particularly useful if you are seeking support for food allergies, intolerances or symptoms related to certain foods.

Before your appointment, Ethos Health will also provide a pre-consultation questionnaire. This helps your dietitian understand your priorities, identify areas you would like to discuss and plan your session.

Do I need a referral to see a dietitian?

No. You do not need a referral to book an appointment with an Ethos Health Dietitian.

You can make an appointment directly if you would like support with improving your nutrition, managing a health condition, addressing food-related concerns, or working towards specific health goals.
